Australian Style UK Points Based System Launched Today

The UK Government has launched the first phase of their new points-based system for non EU immigrants. Currently, the system only applies to highly-skilled workers who are already residing in the country and who wish to extend their visas.

Low skilled workers who reside outside of the EU have been barred.

Jackie Smith, home Secretary, describes the implementation of the UK point-based system as ‘part of the biggest changes to British Immigration policy in a generation’.

Changes include;

  • A new deal for migrants seeking UK citizenship
  • A new UK Border Agency
  • The introduction of ID Cards for Foreign Nationals

The UK points-based system replaces 80 existing migration routes to the UK.
